Honda has approved this breathtaking model for production, but don’t expect to see it in a showroom near you.

The Honda Racer (more pics below) will be produced as a 1/64th Hot Wheels model, a special one-off design produced to celebrate the 40th birthday of the toy car brand (Hot Wheels that is, not Honda).

The striking open-wheeler was selected, along with designs from five additional automakers, as part of the Hot Wheels Designer’s Challenge and is expected on shelves in the next few months.

While it has some very different design features, the Honda Racer is influenced by the 1967 RA 273 Formula One race car and bears a similar white and red paint scheme, large exhaust and some familiar design themes.

It looks very similar to the old-school Grand Prix racer from the side, but the front view reveals a unique shape, with two separate ‘tubs’ for the driver and the passenger.

“The Honda Racer combines the excitement of Honda’s racing heritage with Hot Wheels’ reputation for speed, power, performance and attitude,” says Guillermo Gonzalez, senior designer of Honda R&D Americas, who designed the Honda Racer.

“The core concept is built around our idea for an ‘ultimate racecar’ and leverages the design freedom made possible by a scale model car.”

Gonzalez says he enjoyed design a toy car instead of a full-size Honda.

“I discovered that designing a Hot Wheels car is very different and in some ways more liberating than designing a production car,” he says

“For example, the primary design constraint is that the car had to fit on the orange track and perform a loop. Aside from that, the possibilities are without limit.”
