Lewis Hamilton has been given a 10 spot grid penalty after crashing into Kimi Raikkonen in the pitlane in Canada.

BMW’s Robert Kubica won the race, which was not only his first win but also BMW’s first, which was full of action.

Hamilton (above) was in a good position to challenge for the race win and pitted when the safety car was out on the track.

He rushed down the pit lane behind Kubica and Raikkonen who were both fighting for position.

Both drivers jumped on the brakes as the pitlane traffic light was set on red.

Hamilton noticed the red light too late and swerved, but slammed into the back of Raikkonen taking them both out of the race.

Nico Rosberg was also too late on the brakes slid into the back of Hamilton.

The Williams driver damaged his wing and finished 10th, but was also handed a 10 spot penalty for his mistake.

BMW’s Nick Heidfeld finished the race in second spot, while David Coulthard had the perfect mix of good strategy, luck and skill to finish third in the Red Bull car.

His team-mate Mark Webber didn’t fare so well.

Despite several retirements of front runners, the Australian was unable to score points, coming home in 12th place.

Webber (above) had looked to be in a good position in qualifying on Saturday when he set the fourth fastest time going into the final 10 car shootout.

Unfortunately, Webber got off-line and lost control of his car and hit the wall, which meant he would start from 10th.

He lost a couple of spots and then had to pit at the wrong time, but Webber never appeared to have the pace to match drivers that he easily beats on most occasions.

Towards the end of the race, Webber spun again, but didn’t hit anything.

He was not alone there, with several drivers losing control as the tarmac in some sections started to crumble in the heat, leading to several spins and spectacular crashes.

The slippery conditions also led to several overtaking moves as some drivers slowed dramatically as they lost grip.

Massa never looked like he had the pace around the Canadian track to challenge for a win, but even a podium became too hard after fuel filler mistake cost him lots of time.

The Ferarri driver was able to rescue some points by coming home in fifth place.

He also pulled off the overtaking move of the race, and possible the season when he passed both Heikki Kovalainen and Rubens Barrichello for position at the hairpin turn.

But the day belonged to Kubica, who was taken away from last year’s Canadian Grand Prix in the back of an ambulance following a sickening high speed crash.

This time around, the Polish driver said he thought he was going to be caught up in another smash when Hamilton cam rushing down pitlane.

“I stopped at the exit because the light was still red. Kimi stopped beside me, and then I heard the noise when Hamilton crashed into his car,” he said.

“I have to be grateful to Lewis (Hamilton) as he chose Kimi and not myself.”
